How to Increase Your Author Score to 100 on Hubpages

Firstly, I will say it's not that difficult to get to be a hubber with an Author Score of 100 on hubpages.

Secondly, I will say it's really not THAT important.

When you first join hubpages, your author score will be 30. As you publish new hubs, get traffic, get comments, you will find your author score increasing. Maybe at first you never even noticed. I certainly didn't even understand hubpages at all - and I still don't know everything about it. Hubpages is an incredibly powerful system and, in time, if you work at it, you'll find yourself spotting new areas, new features, new things ... and reading the forums to pick up and use top tips.

When you do become an author with an author score of 100 you'll suddenly realise it's a bit like catching a butterfly. There are so many variables that go into making up your score that you can literally lose it in the blink of an eye. You've done nothing different, nothing wrong, it's just gone. Maybe that day your hubs aren't getting the traffic you were getting last week. Maybe you should have posted in the forum today and you didn't. I've woken up and seen myself as having an author score of 100, made a coffee, come back and I'm a 99. It's really not worth worrying about! Just enjoy your hubbing .... once you stop worrying about it you can concentrate on more interesting things.

As you'll see from my score right now, I am not a 100. I've just had a six month break (I was moving around/didin't have internet access), when I came back I was still a 92 - that's because my hubs were generating good traffic and getting good comments. Concentrate on your hubs, not your scores!

On the other hand, if you want to know HOW to increase your author score to 100 on Hubpages, here's my quick tip list:

Author Score of 100
Author Score of 100

Use the Forums

Using the forums can really boost your visibility on Hubpages. Join in the community, read what others have to say, comment where relevant. Start your own interesting threads. One tip though: don't get confrontational or argumentative with people ... it's just pixels! Chill.

The more you use the forums, the more you'll learn, the more people will notice you and read your hubs - and the higher you'll see your author score creeping.

Write Good Hubs

The definition of a good hub should at least be:

  1. Write a worthwhile length of hub. Sometimes hubs are short as there's not much to say, but try not to scrimp. Remember you can edit them at any point in the future, so re-visit your old hubs and tweak them, add a bit more if you can. Make them worthy of a read.
  2. Make sure you write in good English, check your spelling and grammar.
  3. Use headings and paragraphs to break it up so it's easy to follow - most people don't read every word online, they skim and skip about. Your readers want an easy to read piece, not something that's one mass of text.
  4. Use pictures where you can. I struggle with this bit as the photos/images have to be legal and I can't create my own. Sometimes finding the right picture can take me two hours before I just go with "the best I found/it's not perfect but it'll do" when the hub itself only took 20 minutes to write! It's annoying, but people do like pictures.

Promote Your Hubs

I figure if it's interesting enough for me to write about it, then it's interesting enough to tell people about it somewhere on the Internet. When you promote your hubs, people visit and read them. This traffic will increase your author score. You don't have to stress about the whole promotion thing, but I do like to set myself an easily achievable goal of putting at least one link to my hubs somewhere on the Internet. Maybe you have a signature on a forum somewhere, maybe you Tweet, do you have Myspace/Bebo or a similar membership - if so add something into your profile. Just tell somebody .. anybody ... for every one. Yes, if you spent half a day promoting every hub you write, then your traffic will rocket and you'll get a high author score quicker, but that's a lot of pressure to put yourself under. Enjoy hubbing, or you'll drop out.

Join a Hub Challenge

I joined in 2007, but actually did pretty much nothing until late 2009 (bad aren't I!). Then I joined the 30 day challenge during October and that really turned things around. I was motivated, I was driven, I was writing on steroids! At first you might be a shrinking violet and think "oh that's not for me", but why not ... it's only pixels. Go for it! Hubchallenges really are the key to success! They show you what you're capable of, then you really reap the rewards when the money comes in.

Answer Questions

There's a Questions/Answers section - see if you can answer the questions of others. People will link through and read your hubs.

Use the Tagging/Choose Good Tags

Try to think hard (for about 3 minutes) about what tags are useful and important. What tags do other people use that write about the same things that are in your hubs? Tags create a method for people to be able to move around hubs easily. Use them.

Use Grouping For Your Hubs

One thing you can do is create groups for your hubs. If, for example, you have 10 hubs about pets and 6 recipes, you could create two groups called "pets" and "recipes". You then assign your hubs to the relevant group and instantly a set of navigation arrows appears in each of your hubs, leading readers to other hubs in the same group. Remember, if you forget to do this, it's something you can always do in the future. Maybe at the beginning you don't have enough hubs that are similar enough to create a group ... but when you do, try to remember the feature's there!

Check Your Stats

There's a stats feature in your hub, once it's been running a few months, check your stats. Where's your traffic coming from? Is the traffic growing? What keywords are people using to find your hub?

If you don't know what's working and what's not working, then you can't begin to improve.

Optimise Your Layout

There are thousands of different layouts you can use in your hub. Large picture at the start, large text block at the start. Include/not ebay or Amazon modules ... the list is endless. Read the forums, see what other people suggest. Try new layouts on your hubs.

Use An rss Feed in Your Hubs

If a subject is topical, there'll be other sites publishing relevant information. Get relevant rss feeds into your hub and that'll keep it an active page, which Google will like.

All of the above are relevant in their own way, but overall if you're writing new hubs, promoting them, joining in the forums, then you'll be accumulating 'brownie points' towards your author score.

Link to the Hubs of Others

If you see a hub that's a great resource, link to that hub from yours.

Reply to Comments

People will comment on your hubs. Where you can, reply to their comments. This is polite and makes people realise you're there and real!

I'm sure I've left out something ... but if you can try to do the above, then you'll very quickly find that you too can have an author score of 100 on Hubpages!

Don't forget: ENJOY!!

To Hello, hello

Rather than writing a hub about how to use rss feeds in your hubs, what I'll do is link you through to a couple of existing hubs that have already written about this.

One great way to "share the love" on hubpages is to link to the hubs of others. Other people have written some fabulous hubs already, so there's no need to reinvent the wheel ... simply link to the hubs of others.

See above where there's a new link section with some relevant hubs explaining how to easily use rss feeds in your hubs.

Once you've done it once you'll see how easy it is.

There's always a lot of work to do to make your author score higher. It is better to have, say, 100-200 hubs and just keep promoting them and tweaking them, than to have 1000 abandoned hubs.

I will log in most days for a quick tweak for 5 minutes.

To increase your author score to 100 (or at least increase it to something better), I've said you need to be doing lots of things. Well, I've just joined the September challenge ... and the weekly Hubmob, to give my hubs a boost.

The September Hubpages challenge is to write hubs using the new map module. But that's not all - obviously there are old hubs I own which could benefit from the map module, so it's a good time to go back and refresh/review old hubs.

Keep an eye out for new features in hubpages - and play around with each one as it comes up ... the new HubKarma is something you should be doing: linking to the hubs of others, and linking to your existing hubs.

Keep tweaking - and you too can increase your author score to 100 on Hubpages!

earner profile image

earner Hub Author 20 months ago

Thank you for your kind words, I hope your hub author score is 100 soon!

:)

Seriously though, so long as you're in the 90s it's OK. The main thing is to keep learning little bits and pieces about how hubpages works, join in a challenge maybe, help people in the forums, participate .... and ENJOY ... and it'll just happen.

Even this week I've returned to a couple of old hubs of mine and added in a map capsule because that's new and those hubs would benefit from a map!

Tweak, improve .... and just do what you can when you fancy it.

I kinda agree, Earner, that a score of 100 isn't THAT important. I've been having an absolute BLAST asking and answering questions, although I DO tend to get borderline argumentative in the Religion forums.

My score has been rising pretty steadily with a tiny amount of traffic, but I'm not really keeping track too much...

I thought I'd update this, as right now I've just made 100 again ... it just happened "all by its own".

As I said earlier, to increase your author score to 100 on Hubpages you just have to publish hubs and participate in the forums a bit ....

No doubt, within a few hours of me writing this, I won't be a 100 any more! That's just the way it is.

You'll all get there one day ... and again .... and again.

It's always the way. We know what we should do to make more money and get a higher hubscore on Hubpages, but somehow a lot of the little things we end up overlooking, or forgetting, or running out of time for.

My author score today is 99... no idea why. One or two of my hubs must have attracted extra traffic this morning - but I also published a new hub yesterday.

So it's all the little pieces of the jigsaw that are needed!

Good luck everybody - I'm sure you'll have an author score of 100 really soon.

Here is the forum where you can ask specific questions: http://hubpages.com/forum/2 - and get help from experienced hubbers to increase your author score, or make more money with hubpages, or even just some hints/tips on layouts.

earner profile image

earner Hub Author 6 months ago

Hello Hannah

Hubpages has recently been through some huge changes, to increase to quality of the articles and to meet Google's higher standards.

I believe that new authors do now start with a score of 20, but the rules above still apply. By writing just a few, good articles, you'll quickly find your score soaring - and those new hubbers who just write one and disappear will continue to have a low score.

The purpose of this is to create incentive for genuine writers, while ensuring spammers are disincentivized.

Good luck with your writing!

Thank you for sharing this important information. Outside of hub pages it is very difficult to get concise information on any subject and for free I might add. You willingly give your information and I appreciate that. Am bookmarking this for future reference.

Thanks for this information. I think we all have been there. Worrying too much about hubscore. We should do what we can and leave the rest to fate. Its a much better work ethic than worrying needlessly about fluctuating scores. I appreciate your advice immensely.

Thank you, earner, I found this to be helpful-as I am a new Hubber. I was actually concerned because my score was and remains up-and-down-and-up-an-down. I thought that was a reflection on my Hubs. Your post was educational and while I am trying to learn how to improve my writing, I do what to also improve my Hub experience and perhaps garner some more followers.

Best Regards,

"Use Grouping For Your Hubs" - would you please explain how to create groups - sorry, I'm new to all this. Thanks

Hi njames

There's so much within hubpages - and it's improved/changed/moved around so much that I tried to stay away from where things could be found.

Once logged in, if you go to http://hubpages.com/my/hubs/groups then you'll be in the Groups in Hubpages area.

What you do is create groups, giving them any name you want - then as you write hubs, assign them to groups and the hubs within each group will have an extra navigational menu of arrows to enable somebody to move through a group.

Nobody sees the groups except you, users/readers just see an arrow taking them to the next hub in the group.

I hope that helps

If you want to increase your author score in hubpages it's not necessary to use every tool and every idea, so long as you are aware that there are ways to increase your author score that are built into the system already.

Good luck!

So Earner, what would you say is are the best practices for increasing your author score, and hub score, for that matter? BTW, thanks for the above.

Thanks Earner, so what activities would you say gain maximum improvement in author score, and hub score for that matter?

I'd say participation in the hubpages contests - and generating your own backlinks slowly over time.

My author score was consistently 100 when I was active, publishing new hubs and taking part.... since I've not had the time to do that it's slipped.
