Microwave Steamed Puddings In Under 10 Minutes
I've always loved a good steamed pudding. The simplest of these is Jam Steamed Pudding. But they do take hours to steam and sometimes you fancy a quick method to make a steamed pudding. So here's one recipe for you to try today
Ingredients
- 28 grams/1oz margarine
- 28 grams/1oz sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 56 grams/2oz self-raising flour
- 2 tablespoons of syrup (or jam, or lemon curd)
Method for Microwave Steamed Pudding
- Place the jam in the bottom of a small microwave dish/basin - I always use a 1 pint Pyrex jug.
- Beat all the other ingredients together until they are smooth.
- Spoon the pudding mix over the jam.
- Cover the dish with a microwaveable lid or cling film (pierce it).
- Place in your microwave and cook on medium power for 2½ - 3 minutes.
- Leave to stand for 3 minutes before turning out into a bowl.
Top Tip:
When you've finished, just squirt a tiny amount of washing up liquid into the pyrex jug and fill it with boiing water. By the time you've eaten your pudding, your jug will be ready for a 2 second wipe around and rinse and it's perfectly clean again!
Serving Suggestion
Serve immediately with custard.
This quick and easy, almost instant microwave steamed sponge syrup pudding is scrummy!
Fillings for Your Steamed Sponge
Although this microwave steamed sponge pudding focussed mainly on using jam, you can really use any of your favourite teatime treats. Here are a few ideas:
- Steamed Golden Syrup Pudding, place golden syrup in the bottom of the dish
- Jam steamed sponge pudding: use any flavour jam you like, placed in the bottom of the dish
- Lemon curd steamed pudding, placed in the bottom of the dish
- Lemon curd and sultana pudding, you can layer these ingredients through your pudding
- Chocolate steamed sponge pudding, simply add cocoa to the basic mix, a tablesopoon should be enough. You could also drop in some small pieces of chocolate to melt.

If it came out dense, then it means something needs slight adjustment. It could either be that there was a little too much flour, or it was cooked a little too long (microwave ovens vary in their wattage). What I like to do is to beat quite a lot of air into the mix before I put it in the microwave.
Give it another go, even if it comes out dense it's still cheaper and more instantly available than buying one from a supermarket - and you made it yourself, so you know what's in it.
When I cook something new with a microwave, I find I adjust it over the first 2-3 goes, just to suit my own tastes.
I love the way I can get an instant microwave suet pudding from this, just 3-4 minutes after fancying one.
OMG! I just made this with a sliced banana and two spoonfuls of caramel sauce. The three minutes waiting time was unbearable. I just about inhaled the pudding with some cold custard. Fab.
Paul, that sounds truly scrummy! I want to try that now, but I don't have caramel sauce at the moment!
I might have to go shopping.
Mmmmm Banana and Caramel Steamed Sponge Pudding FTW!!
Great idea.
(it was Bonne Maman Caramel Jam, by the way - kind of like dolce de leche)
I just made another sponge tonight . . . thawed some roasted rhubarb I had hiding in the freezer. It was just to finish off the carton of custard, honest ;)
Sounds fantastic Paul ... you're well trained :)
It's only been two days and you've already invented Banana & Caramel Sponge Pudding ... and now Roasted Rhubarb Sponge Pudding.
I'm wondering what's next now!
I was thinking of pear and chocolate sauce - but I'm not going to do it yet . . . worried just how habitforming this could become ;)
On the healthy eating note, I forgot to say that in the mix for my rhubarb sponge I replaced the margerine with half sunflour oil and half apple sauce - was still fine :)
Mmm Pear and Chocolate Sponge Pudding, you're just showing off now :)
I noticed microwave puddings in the local shop last night and deliberately checked the price/size. They are about 1/4 of the size and cost 80p each! This pudding (posh toppings excepted!) costs about 20p to put together,
Bargain! And you know what's in it.
I look forward to trying this out when I get a microwave! Think I will try the lemon curd option!
yummmy!!!! delicious.
I tried it with blueberries in the pudding mix, and a good dollop of maple syrup at the bottom of the cooking basin.
It's not bad - I used a recipe from the 'real' world. I think it might be best to cook the blueberries gently before adding them to the cooking mix.
I was very skeptical. Microwave a pudding? I've tried it--twice. I can't believe how good it came out. And so easy and so fast. Same with Bird's custard. I only make it in the microwave now--it actually comes out better.
Can i double the ingredients, and would I need to microwave double the time stated for smaller pudding.
Yes you could just double - although exact time depends on the ingredients - my microwave is an 850 and I find a pudding consisting of 4 oz flour, 2 oz suet and 2 of sugar (plus eggs and jam or whatever) takes 6 minutes.
This is an awesome microwave sponge pudding recipe. I've made two now!!!
I didn't know how to make a microwave sponge pudding before, I didn't know you could!
Cheers!
thank you very much, i am looking forward to making my mircrowave pudding!! i think i am going to make a lemon one. as i have always loved lemon, :) this website has help me find what i have been wanting for ages. so great thanks to the uploader!! im now of tog go make my microwave lemon cake/pudding... wish me best of luck!! x
Great! Not stodgy and thick like most other microwave cake recipes I've tried! Usually they stink of eggs and come out all stiff, but this turned out lovely with jam! Can't wait to try the lemon curd next.
If you find it to be dense simply separate the egg, whisk the egg white and fold it in once you've beaten in all the other ingredients.
Came out really chewy, all the other recipes i've checked say plain flour. I will try it again with plain and see.
Hi again don't try this with plain flour it was a disaster.
Oh dear Sharon
Sorry to hear it didn't go to plan :)
Re your first attempt, if it comes out chewy then you need to adjust something. Maybe it needs microwaving a bit less.
Some things that will affect the quality of a microwave steamed sponge pudding, apart from the ingredients themselves are:
- The size/shape of the container
- The power of the microwave
- The length of time you microwave it for
It's worth persevering, just to be able to whip up easy steamed sponge puddings on demand when you've come in late, or just fancy a bit of easy indulgence.
Good luck for next time!
I made a two minute pudding without any flaour (except for its natural flavour) then drizzled lemon juice over it. Let it atand then for about a minute. Topped with custard. Delicious!
I tried this and it came out very dry. it tasted like a biscotti. i followed the recipe exactly & double checked the measurements and also microwaved for only 2 min 30 secs. i even beat the egg white first as suggested to incorporate more air :(
I'm sorry to hear that Dav. Every microwave is slightly different - and even the size/shape of your dish and the internal size of your microwave can make a difference to any microwave recipe.
If it was dry, it was cooked too long and/or at too high a temperature.
I'd give this microwave steamed sponge pudding another try, with a lower setting/temperature.
Maybe you beat those eggs a little too much!
I do hope your next attempt is spot on!
